What Makes a Good Product Owner

Scrum has clearly defined all the roles and the Product Owner is one of the key role in Scrum framework. A Product Owner is a small entrepreneur who derives and drives strategy, vision and product backlog. He is a fulcrum of the entire scrum team, someone who maintains balance between business, customer and team and takes the decisions.

Anyone, to be successful in this role should possess these qualities:

  1. Accountability // Owns Product and Backlog
  2. Clarity and Visibility // Steer the direction, yet knows the details
  3. Masters of Negotiation // Does not hate conflict
  4. Good Communicators // Great Storyteller
  5. Always available // Is Involved and keeps Involved

To detail the points above, A good Product Owner typically has to do with following key traits:

Good Product Owner can’t be summed up in a short article, it needs a lot — right from business, market and domain expert, to stakeholder management, to communication, negotiations, to elicitation, to ownership, to relationship, to software lifecycle, to technology, scrum methodology, to requirement elicitation, is a team player.
